Anthropology & Indigenous Peoples in Canada, Course 1, Class 1/5

This is a recording of the first “free anthropology” class held at Solstice Cafe, Victoria on Monday, May 17, 2010. The course is called Anthropology and Indigenous Peoples in Canada and was offered over 5 weeks. Marc Pinkoski offered the course as an answer to students’ calls to make certain basic information about Indigenous peoples and the history of Canada more widely available. We were all very surprised by the first class because of the large attendance. This support and interest carried through the remaining 4 classes of the course and spurred Marc on to offer an expanded version of the course in October 2010 (audio casts are available and the video for that class will be coming soon).

Anthropology and Indigenous Peoples in Canada

This 5-week course is designed from a set of classes I have recently taught at UVic. I have two purposes for offering it: The first is to introduce students to the discipline of anthropology and the second is to show the relationship of anthropology to Indigenous Peoples and the history of Canada. My objective is to answer the calls of many students to make this information more accessible. I also hope that offering classes in this manner may assist those who feel alienated from some forms of learning such as high school or university. The class is free.
